This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Jazz Lads @ Saltburn Cricket Club - Nov. 9

A pleasing start to the new venue was made with a near capacity audience.
The night started well with Stanley Turrentine's Sugar which, although a strong tenor feature, also showcased John Daniels’ excellent bass playing.

After numbers including Out Of Nowhere, Blue Bossa and an up-tempo version of Have You Met Miss Jones? with fine solos all-round, the audience were treated to My Funny Valentine featuring Richie on tenor and showing him to be, in my opinion, one of the finest saxophonists in the area. The first set concluded with the perennial Ellington classic, Take the A Train. 
An up tempo Work Song, with fine solos from Ian, Dave and Mark, was followed by a programme which included Sunny, God Bless the Child, Back at the Chicken Shack and Watermelon Man before Georgia on my Mind brought the night to a close.
The Saltburn Cricket Club with its ample parking space and its friendly and enthusiastic staff promises to be an excellent venue for an evening of jazz.
