CD Review: In Common: Walter Smith lll & Matthew Stevens

Another Whirlwind winner. Subtle, cool and laid back, this bucks the trend for the frenetic, atonal (to be polite about it) offerings that sometimes land on the doormat. Walter Smith is one of the more restrained of the current crop of contemporary tenor players. His dry, yet not unemotional sound, brings to mind Warne Marsh. Gentle explorations executed without bravura but with no lack of technique.

In Matthew Stevens, Smith has the perfect running mate - it's no accident that they adopted the moniker In Common such is the empathy displayed. 

Simplicity is the foundation on which their complex improvisations are built. Less is more may well be the motto but that goes out of the window when they are in full flight. On vibes, Ross proves himself to be no mean soloist either slotting in effortlessly with the two 'guvners' and filling in the spaces that may otherwise have been occupied by a piano. Bass and drums contribute equally making this a totally level playing field.

With the exception of the late Geri Allen's Unconditional Love - performed in a manner that equates with the title - the material is all original although not credited to either individual so maybe they were joint efforts.
