This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Day 3: House of the Black Gardenia - Sage Gateshead, April 8

Bobbi Charleston (washboard/vocals); Michael Lamb (trumpet); Keith Robinson (sax/clarinet); David Gray (trombone); Michael Littlefield (guitar/banjo/vocals); Ben Immrye (piano/vocals); Neil Hopper (bass/sousaphone); Kit Haigh (drums).

The concourse was crowded, the word had got around that this band was something else. The swing dancers were poised, ready to occupy the prepared floor space and the band kicked off with Blue Drag. 20s/30s jazz that slots in nicely between the New Orleans/Dixieland period and the later bebop sounds.
In other words, Swing!
All the horns were well featured throughout. David Gray playing trombone like J.C. Higginbotham, Michael Lamb, often in plunger mode and Robinson blowing tough tenor, subtle soprano and charismatic clarinet.
Leader Bobbi sang and shimmied and manipulated her thimble-fingered digits across her Reliance washboard like a real scrubber (please accept that remark as having been written in jest Bobbi!) She's great.
More vocals from Littlefield and Imrye with the latter playing fine stride piano and the former giving us some period style guitar (he also played banjo without causing too much damage). Bass/sousaphone kept things stomping as did Kit on kit.
However, the session was given the seal of approval by the dancers who Lindy hopped like their American ancestors did at the Savoy Ballroom back in the day.
Quite an afternoon.

Oh yes - it was fantastic - those of us not among the swing dancers were shaking our booties at the back!!
