The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A product of Jazz North East's growing connections with the European jazz scene, this all-day event, unique to Newcastle, is a showcase for Dutch jazz, with representatives from both the acclaimed older generation and the new generation that is building its own reputation throughout Europe. Nine musicians are flying in specially from Amsterdam, to be joined by two representatives of the UK scene in bass player Olie Brice and Tyneside's very own Faye MacCalman on reeds.
At the time that Jazz North East had flyers and posters printed for the event, the detailed programme had still to be finalised. But it's now pretty well nailed down, and will feature a mix of established groups and new combinations that the musicians themselves have suggested as creatively fruitful. In order to pack in as much as possible, each of the sessions (morning and afternoon) will contain three sets, each of which will be further sub-divided into a short performance from one of the new combinations, and a longer outing for one of the established groups - so your ticket money buys you no fewer than twelve bands!
Because the musicians will be discussing this right up to the day before (when they will be rehearsing at the Jazz Café), there could still be some minor tweaking to the programme, but the latest information I have is as follows:

AFTERNOON SESSION : 2.00 - 5.30pm
Set One:  Olie Brice / John Dikeman / Onno Govaert + Ab Baars Trio (Ab Baars / Wilbert de Joode / Martin van Duynhoven)
Set Two: Reinier Baas solo +  Feecho (Kaya Draksler / Onno Govaert)
Set Three : Olie Brice / Wilbert de Joode / Faye MacCalman + Baars-Henneman Duo

EVENING SESSION : 7.00 - 10.30pm
Set One:  Ab Baars / Olie Brice / Jasper Stadhouders / Martin van Duynhoven + Kaja Draksler solo
Set Two:  Reinier Baas / Ig Henneman / Faye MacCalman + Cactus Truck (John Dikeman / Onno Govaert / Jasper Stadhouders)
Set Three : Ig Henneman - Kaja Draksler Duo + Jasper Stadhouders / Wilbert de Joode / Onno Goveart

With the exception of the Gateshead International Jazz Festival, I don't normally send out detailed previews of gigs until the week before they're happening. But this is such a major event - a one-off for Tyneside - that you should really think about getting your tickets now . . .
