A
large number of those from the headline made their way round to the lounge and
were suitably rewarded. The leader, with Paul
Grainger, on bass for the rest of the night, and Russ Morgan on drums, jacketless
but still dapper in tie and waistcoat, took the first three before FDT,
typically un-phased by the illustrious company in the lounge, couldn’t be held
back any longer.
Somebody
else who just can’t help themselves soon took over the piano stool from the
host and was followed by the two headliners his trio had just backed in the
theatre, showing that they’re true Jazz musicians who never miss an opportunity
to play, and Bruce Adams’ trumpet, in the more confined space of the lounge,
totally blew the roof off the sucker.
He
seemed fascinated by Francis and it transpires guitar is his second instrument.
Francis told him trumpet is his second instrument but reassured him he has
nothing to worry about.
The
happiest face of the whole festival belonged to John Trevitt from Cleethorpes
who sat in on drums for just one number but later claimed it was one of the
best things he’d ever done, and it showed.
Lady
Kate, who Paul confirmed (what we already suspected) is the Boss, called time
at about 11.45 and it went out still on a high without an embarrassing fizzling
out.
