Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Henrik Jensen’s Followed by Thirteen – Blackwater

Henrik Jensen (double bass), Andre Canniere (trumpet & flugelhorn), Esben Tjalve (piano) & Antonio Fusco (drums)
(Review by Russell).
Dane Henrik Jensen has been involved in the British jazz scene for the best part of two decades having relocated to London to study music in 1997. Followed by Thirteen is a quartet, formed in 2010, comprising Jensen’s fellow countryman Esben Tjalve (piano), American trumpet and flugelhorn player Andre Canniere and Italian drummer Antonio Fusco. Blackwater is the band’s second album following on from the 2013 debut release Qualia.

Blackwater’s eight tracks were written by Jensen with each one right out of the straight ahead bag. Andre Canniere sets the standard on The Dutch Danemann with some first class trumpet playing. London-Berlin hears Canniere’s muted horn, owing something to Miles on Seven Steps to Heaven. Listening drummer Antonio Fusco responds rapidly to unfolding events with shimmering cymbals and deft work on the snare. Three tracks in, time to slow things down on Bonza. Canniere switches between trumpet and flugelhorn.

The bandleader introduces Riccardo’s Room. Jensen’s secure bass pattern invites pianist Tjalve to stretch out on a thoughtful solo underpinned by Fusco’s sparkling momentum.
Tjalve references old school piano playing in a contemporary setting on Schur-as with a blues feeling at his fingertips as Andre Canniere’s late-night phrasing spills over into the penultimate tune on the album, the intriguingly titled The Unready.
Russell.

Blackwater by Henrik Jensen’s Followed by Thirteen is released September 2 on Jellymould Jazz (JM-JJ023). Jensen tours throughout September beginning with a CD launch September 6 at London’s Pizza Express, Soho, London with a date at the Jazz Café, Newcastle September 27.
