This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. World Premiere of St. Cuthbert's Suite in March

St. Cuthbert, widely regarded as the Patron Saint of Northern England, died on March 20, 687AD - 1329 years ago - so the forthcoming world premiere of the St. Cuthbert's Suite is long overdue
This specially commissioned composition, composed by Durham-born musician Paul Edis, is a musical account of the life of St. Cuthbert. Drawing upon influences from jazz, folk and classical music it will be performed by some of the finest musicians in the North East on Friday, March 18 at Ushaw College, and then at Durham Cathedral on Saturday, March 19.
The Ushaw Ensemble consists of Graham Hardy (Trumpet/Flugel), Graeme Wilson (saxes/bass clarinet/flute), Emma Fisk (Violin), Alice Burn (Northumbrian Pipes), Paul Edis (Piano/MD), Rob Walker (drums/perc) and Paul Susans (double bass). 
Cuthbert was a shepherd from Melrose - he saw a vision of the soul being carried up to heaven by Angels - he joined a monastery - as an evangelist he was described as 'indefatigable' and 'the wonder worker of Britain - he lived in solitude as a hermit - his body had to be moved several times after his death (including 7 years on the road) fleeing the Vikings, until eventually settling in Dunholme (Durham) where the Cathedral now stands (apparently, it would appear from the photo, calling in at the Gala Theatre) .
