This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Things You Can Do At The Globe For Free

This very Thursday October 1 is another of the Jazz Meets Folk open mic nights, when you can perform either sort of music and a few types of music in between as well, such as your own songs.  We usually have folk fiddle, traditional song, jazz piano and song, saxophones, drums, and I’m wondering when we’ll maybe get a visit from a poet.  Everyone who wishes to perform can do so, it’s free entry, raffle £1, starts 8pm.
But I should also mention the Sunday afternoon Jam Sessions, 3pm to 6pm, which are running well.  These are for jazz performers.  The 2nd Sunday of the month is aimed at less experienced musicians, and the September session was under the guidance of a bass guitarist who was very encouraging.  The 4th Sunday of the month is for more experienced players.  Last Sunday’s session included a Latin improvisation session, when we performed freely over steady Latin riffs.  Such fun! As a singer, I’ve decided I fit both categories, so I often go to both sessions in the month.  Not sure how I worked that out, but I like free events.  So if you like free events too, get yourself along!
