This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Girls in Airports - Fables

You can imagine how I excited I was when asked to review a CD by a Danish band called ‘Girls in Airports’ however this was not quite the sensual experience one might expect from a band so provocatively named. In fact this is classic Nordic jazz, subtle understated and hypnotic.
  This is the bands fourth recording and owes it’s title in part to the influence of Charles Mingus and his famous album Fables of Faubus. Personally I found very little in this album which reminded me of the legendary bass player. Each track seems to build up slowly and grows throughout with layer upon layer of instrumentation. At times the album has an almost prog rock feel to it. The variety of percussive effects that Dybbroe incorporates is quite mesmerising and really adds to the overall atmospherics as does the combination of the 2 saxophones which provide an interesting textured ambiance.
Overall a pleasant listening experience but I won’t be rushing to Heathrow or for that matter Newcastle airport to greet them.
