This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Sinne Eeg - Eeg-Fonnesbæk

Two Danish singers in the one week? Just goes to show that the distaff side's bid for world domination is growing stronger!
On Tuesday, Mette Juul's There is a Song set the bar almost out of reach then what happens? Along comes Sinne Eeg with Eeg-Fonnesbæk.
So which one to go for?
Both!
They're totally different each with their own appeal. Juul's uses, mainly, her own compositions with deep, often profound, lyrics and a band that includes wiz trumpetman  Ambrose Akimusere. 
Eeg dispenses with the dressing and relies solely on bassist Fonnesbæk for support and a choice selection of standards - Willow Weep For me; Evil Man Blues; You Don't Know What Love is; Summertime (wouldn't be a show without it!); Body and Soul; Beautiful Love; Come Rain or Come Shine; Fellini's Waltz and Fonnesbæk's Taking it Slow.
It's a compelling performance - reminiscent of some of the duo numbers Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion do - and Eeg's smoky vocals get right to the core of the song. Willow Weep for Me can bear comparison with any version from either side of the Atlantic whilst Evil Man Blues, first recorded as Evil Gal Blues by Dinah Washington, proves that you don't have to be a salty mama to sing the blues.
Fonnesbæk on bass lays down just what's needed - the harmonic foundation to keep Eeg on the right track and the stimulus to inspire her to stretch out and make each number her own.
