This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Indigo Kid II - Fist Full of Notes.

This is Dan Messore’s second outing with his band Indigo Kid and a fine listen it is too. Nearly all the tunes on the album have strong melodies and the tempo on most of the tracks play out at a fairly gentle pace with the exception of the livelier Carpet Boys, All Hands to Dance and the final piece  Sketches in the Fabric.
The electronic Mr Randall also departs from the general tone of the album with its unmelodic but interesting dynamic.  The interplay between all four band members is superb and Trish Clowes on Sax seems to have a real empathy with the Messore guitar. Messore’s playing style is similar to many of the contemporary modern players who use electronic augmentation to add depth and texture to the proceedings. The rhythm section of the vastly experienced drummer France and electric bassist Harries help create a great soundscape. Ian Ballamy, Messore’s former tutor, guests to great effect on two of the pieces -  the ballad The Healing Process and the aforementioned Sketches in the Fabric.
An enjoyable album, while not pulling up any trees certainly signals the rise of an emerging talent.
