Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Support their big day (night)!

(Preview by Russell)
Newcastle University music students are about to give their Final Year Undergraduate performances. Strict examination conditions will make for a nerve wracking occasion. The good news is that these performances are open to the public. Better still, this year some of the jazz students will be off campus at the Jazz Café. On Tuesday (May 12th) in the upstairs room of the Pink Lane venue four students will be looking to give their performance of a lifetime and you can be there! Arrive early, it’s free admission, grab a beer, coffee or pot of tea, take a seat and show your support. At six o’clock the room will be bursting at the seams and the family and friends of Ella El-Salahi (voice) will be bursting with pride. Bebop Spoken Here has heard El-Salahi with the University’s big band and in small combos. You are in for a treat.
At 7:00pm. Jennifer Amey (voice) will knock ‘em dead. Don’t miss her. Saxophonist Faye MacCalman is sure to impress the examiners at 8:15pm and Josh Lane (trumpet) rounds off the evening at 9:10pm. Great players all, their accompanists (many fellow students) likewise, Tuesday evening will be a highlight of the year

On Wednesday 13th make a bee-line for Culture Lab on King’s Walk (just of Barras Bridge) to hear more. Guitarist Dan Morgan gets things under way at half past five, at 6:20pm drummer Lewis West will kill ‘em (guaranteed!), as will Joe Cromey-Hawke and George Hutton (drummers both) at 7:15pm and 7:55pm respectively. These guys have been heard over the last year or two. They can play! Get along to Spaces 4 & 5, Culture Lab.

Pianist Jamie Lawson has drawn the short straw. He’s up before the examiners at the un-jazz like hour of 10:30am on Thursday (14th) in the Recital Room,  in Armstrong Building (main entrance on Queen Victoria Road, opposite the RVI). Lawson is one helluva player. Support your local jazz gunslinger/singers!
