This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mark Williams Trio @ The Globe Jazz Bar, Newcastle - May 23.

This was quite a trio - almost a jazz version of Cream! Three musicians at the top of their game gelling into one after minimal rehearsal.
Mark Williams, the bench mark for any aspiring guitarist. Dermot McNeil, a musical associate of Mark's going back to their embryo days in Northern Ireland, A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and currently bassist with the Human Revolution Orchestra, Dermot came up specially for this gig.
Russ Morgan too has an impressive pedigree having worked with many well known names down south and he proved to be the ideal man to kick things along.
Much of the material was by Mark eg: Booze Blues; Weird Waltz; (well named!) Good Answer; Balaclava Street and Major Detail. Dermot chipped in with Modal Conspiracy, which featured an impressive hand drumming intro by Russ and an arco bass solo played with a cello-like resonance, and Avenue to Nowhere, a theme from the film of the same name. As well as playing bass he was also the film's Music Supervisor. As a matter of further north east interest, Rob Brockway played piano on the soundtrack. 
Mark Williams forecast that, in 5 years time, Avenue to Nowhere would have become a standard - he could well be right.
The one actual standard played was a sensitive version of Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You with Mark's rich chords rising above the thump thump thump of the disco in the bar below.
The evening ended with Tubes and a well deserved show of appreciation by the Jazz Coop audience.
