This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Azymuth @ Hoochie Coochie = March 5

Azymuth laid down their own particular brand of samba jazz and 70's Brazilian pop to a crowded Hoochie. Repetitious it may be yet, nonetheless, the compulsive rhythms wind their strings around your heart attuning your pulse into their's.
Brilliant musicians all, my feet tap, my hands clap. What a drummer! Bass is no bummer! Keys and Korg and Fender Rhodes take us down Brazilian roads.Senor Conti picks up the pandeiro and soon we're flying down to Rio de Janeiro.
It was exciting stuff and, after 40 years touring the world, I guess they've got the formula right - the Hoochie audience certainly thought so..
Last time around I commented on the lack of dancers - no shortage this time after a couple of jazz dancers (pictured) set the ball rolling. This was quite a night with, several musicians in the audience - musicians usually feel it's beneath them to support other guys gigs - but those guys that were there last night knew different.
The thing about Hoochie is the ambiance, you're among like minded souls who want to hear good music whilst still having a good time.
I think the lasses were having a good time - them and everyone else!
Good to meet you Helen and Haley - and Patti, as ever, showing her appreciation.
