Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Maurizio Minardi - Piano Ambulance.

Maurizio Minardi (pno); Nick Pini (bs); Shirley Smart (cello); Jason Reeve (dms).
(Review by Lance).
I'm not sure what a "Piano Ambulance" is. Is it a furniture van that takes ailing pianos to the knackers yard? (If so, Jazz Café take note.) Maybe it's a mobile piano repair unit (If so, Jazz Café take note.)
The album booklet isn't too clear on this either.
However, I'm pleased to say that this is one journey by ambulance you are unlikely to regret. That is, not if you like a mix of contemporary jazz piano with some post Bach classical elements.. Hints of Loussier, maybe a little Jarrett  posturing and some wonderfully integrated ensemble playing.
The addition of cello adds much warmth and I often wonder why cellos and violas aren't more frequently used in mainstream(ish) situations? Both have so much more to offer tone-wise than solo violins - possibly a lack of tutors capable of nudging the students towards the mean streets or maybe it's the fact that the student's choice of instrument indicates that he/she wouldn't be seen at "Ronnie's" 'cept perhaps on a jolly! Interesting to hear views on cellos/violas/oboes/bassoons place in jazz.
Getting back to the disc I'm listening to, it's interesting and, at times, compelling. Compelling enough for me to put a few dates in my diary.
February 2, 2015 - Release date.
February 16, 2015 - Launch at Vortex, London.
March 5, 2015 - Queens Hall Arts Centre Hexham.
The Hexham gig comes 'twixt dates at Hull and Corsham (Wiltshire) and serves to remind us just how active Hazel and her team are out there working to provide accessible jazz in the mid west of our region.
Long may their efforts be rewarded.
Maurizio Minardi - Piano Ambulance. (Belfagor MM12).
Lance.
PS: Minardi is one helluva fine pianist!
