This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Nancy Kelly - B That Way.

Yet another vocalist! They sprout overnight like mushrooms - on both sides of The Pond. 
The Huffington Post describes mushrooms as: ...They can even be magical. They have the ability to add a depth of flavour to our dishes that is otherwise unattainable.
Ms Kelly is just such a delicacy - perhaps a Chanterelle (fruity and peppery) - and she certainly makes her mark on this, her long awaited 5th CD and her first with the B3 line-up.
B That Way is one of those discs that grab you from track one (Come Back to Me). Voice, Hammond B3, tenor, guitar and drums groovin' as one.
Kelly can handle a song as good as anyone. She does it with feeling without being over dramatic. The pitching is spot on even when making the occasional swoop up into the rafters and she exudes warmth on poignant ballads such as Don't Explain, Don't Worry 'Bout me and Don't Go To Strangers. Billie's Bounce (inexplicably called Billy's Bounce on the sleeve) moves at a fair lick, as befits a bebop classic, and Kelly handles the Jon Hendricks' lyric with ease bringing to mind Annie Ross' Twisted.
Losito treats the B3 intelligently and with restraint albeit without any lack of swing. A name to reckon with. Weldon blows lyrical, straight down the middle tenor - a joy to hear in these days of extremism. Likewise Bernstein makes every note count and Intorre keeps the ship afloat and on course. One of the numbers that really hits the spot is Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone.
An impossible request! I'm going to be talking about Nancy Kelly long term!
