This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Salsa Café Jam - January 12

This weeks Jam, which is organised by the Pink Lane Jazz Co-op, was probably the most successful yet. Not only were there a fair number of musicians playing solid jazz, there were many diners, with families and people in for a quiet drink or coffee, and indeed one or two escapees from the match! There was at least one Man. City fan!
What better thing to do on a winter Sunday afternoon but chill out with a meal and a glass of wine and listen to jazz!
The resident trio this week was delighted to welcome Barry Ascroft on piano who combined brilliantly with Dave Parker on Bass and Pete Ninnim on Drums. After a few teething troubles with the PA etc this was put right by the café personnel very quickly and the drummer was able to rest his brushes for a while.
John Rowland was his usual inspiring self on Tenor Sax, and the regular Stuart Mckie complemented the overall sound on Guitar. Stuart has not been playing Jazz guitar for very long (ex rocker I believe!) but he is making some lovely solos. Fi Finden arrived to give us some great Tenor and some tuneful and tasteful vocals. Stuart Finden added a third very welcome Tenor sax. Towards the end of the afternoon El Supremo (Pete Gilligan) popped in to sit in for a few numbers which is always very welcome.
Sitting with both hands full jammed under a staircase it’s not really possible to make a note of all the tunes but a fine version of On Green Dolphin Street stood out. The closing number was a great performance by the entire ensemble of Tenderly.
