This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Phillip Clouts Quartet - The Hour of the Pearl

Russell reviewed a live gig by the Clouts Quartet last October at New Hartley. He wrote enthusiastically and, listening to this, their latest album, I can understand why!
Clouts is both an expressive pianist and an imaginative composer Some of the pieces betray his South African origins with punchy Township rhythms whilst others concentrate on the melodic side of contemporary modern.
Add Lopez-Real's alto and the feel is of Art Pepper, Dave Liebman - lyrical, modern sounding displaying the beauty the alto (and soprano) sax is capable of. A professor at the Guildhall School of Music his playing goes a long way to explain why so many good musicians graduate from there.
Desbruslais is the perfect drummer. Laying back when necessary, driving the guys forward when needed and soloing effectively. On bass Alex Keen - he missed the New Hartley gig - is musically self-effacing but not to the extent of being aurally invisible. He provides the fulcrum and when he does step forward the results are magical.
The CD title was inspired by a poetic extract from Steinbeck's Cannery Row.
"The grey time after the light has come but before the sun has risen...a time of peace, a deserted time, a little era of rest...the interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself."
Somehow that quote seems just right for the music on this CD
