Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit

Greg Porter (vcl); Chip Crawford (md/pno); Aaron James (bs); Emanuel Harrold (dms); Yosuke Sato (alt); Tivon Pennicott (ten).
(Review by Lance).
"Gregory Porter, the man most likely to bring jazz back into the mainstream." So said The Independent whilst The Guardian described Porter as "A rapidly ascending star with a magnificent blues-baritone voice."
Pretty fair descriptions of a man whose appealing lush baritone has already been nominated for two grammy awards.
Porter's is an emotive voice that exudes a gorgeous mix of jazz, blues and soul without too many vocal pyrotechnics.
The ballads, Water Under the Bridge, Hey Laura and Wolfcry are pleas from the heart - lyrical and reflective, plaintive and passionate.Free is medium pace soul with the horns laying down a harmonic framework behind the vocal and Sato taking off "freely"! Brown Grass, a tale of unrequited love, has a delicate tenor solo by Tennicott. Wind Song, a love song, The In Crowd, a soul jazz hit for Ramsey Lewis back in the 60's. Porter stays faithful to the original.
Movin' a nice lyric -"When you say you wanna be free? Free to sing, Free to dance, Free to let someone take a glance, In a world that's free of me." When Love Was King, a melancholy religioso piece emphasising the richness of  his voice and remembering a bygone world.
I Fall in Love Too Easily, apart from The In Crowd, the only non Porter composition. Accompanied by just piano and bass it's difficult not to make comparisions with the classic versions by Sinatra or Chet Baker but it has to be said that Greg Porter holds his own in that exalted company.
A welcome third album by a charismatic singer ever increasing in popularity. Perhaps this one will get more than just the Grammy nomination..
Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit was released on  the Blue Note label on Sept. 9.
