This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul James Band @ Hoochie Coochie

The James Band are known, primarily, as a function band - you know the thing - Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Dinner Dances and Hunt Balls. I'm sure they do it very well. Tonight, however, it was a  chance to let their hair down and unleash their jazz/rock chops.
A couple of instrumentals at the opening of each set - predictably Canteloupe Island and Watermelon Man - got the musical adrenalin flowing before Ms. Adams took over.
Skin tight black mini and heels only slightly lower than Grey's Monument - she looked good but would she sound good?
The answer was "Yes".
Kicking off with Sting's Fragile (I think) we knew we were in for something special. Summertime - I'm starting to surmise that girl singers are told at birth that if they ever want to sing jazz they must sing Summertime! I did once hear a jazz singer who didn't sing Summertime but for the life of me I can't remember her name - maybe it was just wishful thinking! In all fairness, Laura Adams didn't cause the Gershwins to turn over in their graves.
Some Clapton - Drowning in a River of Tears - Dusty's Spooky and At Last a la Etta.
Great set, great singing and some superb guitar work from Hudson. Keyboards demonstrated how to build a solo from minimalist beginnings to kick ass finale. Drums, right on the money and bass gives solid support.
Second set moved up a gear with Besame Mucho, a wild Route 66 and Sunny just some of the highlight.
A decent turn out and a few dancers to add some extra sparkle to what was an enjoyable evening.

Lance, I owe you a profuse apology, but the first song I ever sung at the Jazz Cafe jazz singers class gig was - you've guessed it 'Summertime'
