This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz Caf Refugees @ The Star.

Crombie may be gone but his legacy lingers on. I wonder if he ever dreamed that he would be remembered in this way? - Probably not.
However, this latest venture indicates that the gone but not forgotten tag will be around for a while longer.
There was a goodly turnout on this, the first of a series of gigs to attempt to re-create the "Caff". Of course they never will - how could they? It was unique. Nevertheless, Lindsay got things rolling with a powerful set that included standards, blues and a lot of Joni Mitchell.
Mark Williams crafted solos that rubber stamped his credentials in the jazz guitar hierarchy and John Pope did just that on double bass. Mark Robertson kept it moving whilst Lindsay, trouper that she is, rose above the sometimes noisy audience. If she'd moved from trouper to trooper it would have been forgiveable but the lady took it all in her stride.
The jam brought Paul Gowland on tenor and Mike P on guitar to augment Pope (Later, Katie Trigger came off the subs bench for a rare appearance on double bass) and Robertson on Alone Together. It made for an exciting contrast and it would be nice to see the weekly sessions build up from this promising start.
Next week it's PG3 - Peter Gilligan, Paul Grainger and drummer.
