Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Scarborough Jazz Festival September 30 - Afternoon.

I have to confess that the Wold Top Brewery bitters didn't go down as well with me this year as they did last year so I opted to have my lunchtime pint down at the Golden Ball overlooking the harbour. Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter went down such a treat I had another one - and at a mere £1.80 a pint! so it was with a spring in my step that I returned to The Festival.
Rhythmica.
Binker Golding (ten); Mark Crown (tpt); Peter Edwards (pno); Rob Astley (bs); Andy Chapman (dms).
A hard-blowing Blue Note inspired set that included some delicate tenor on Sam Rivers' Beatrice, an impressive piano feature, Triple Threat and fiery Morgan/Hubbard trumpet from Crown and a near violent tenor solo from Golding on Herbie Hancock's The Sorcerer. Blind Man Stomp was dedicated to Abram Wilson whose spirit hung over The Spa in a very uplifting way.

Jenni Molloy Trio.
Molloy (bs); Stuart MacDonald (saxes); Chris Sykes (dms).
Bach Reloaded was the heading which gives a fair indication of what this was all about. The lady is a formidable bassist and it was good to hear MacDonald who was quite a revelation for me never having heard him previously. Interesting session.
Just East.
Jeremy Shoham (alt/sop/clt); Neil Angilley (keys); Phil Scragg (bs); Rick Finlay (dms).
Didn't catch too much of this Asian orientated (with a touch of Latin) set as my stomach was crying out for food - a situation I remedied, appropriately enough with a delicious chicken curry in the Jazz Lounge whilst listening to...
Jim Birkett Trio.
Nuages, Meditation, All The Things You Are and My One and Only Love - just some of the highlights of this visit to the oasis where one can chill-out and relax to some good sounds.
Lance.
