Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2012's Ayanna returns to The Sage Gateshead Tuesday November 6, 2012

MOBO-award nominee, Ayanna, returns to The Sage Gateshead following her captivating performance at Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2012 supporting Roberto Fonseca. This time Ayanna will be supporting Kairos 4Tet in an intimate gig on Tuesday 6th November as part of their extensive 2012 UK tour.
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of Karios 4Tet and the likes of Adele and Boyz II Men, Ayanna is hoping to collect the MOBO Award for ‘Best Jazz Act’ 2012 on 3rd November.
Ayanna is a multi-talented composer, vocalist, cellist and pianist, and a rising star on the international jazz scene. She has worked alongside UK artists Courtney Pine, Nitin Sawhney, Jason Yarde, Robert Mitchell, Nick Mulvey and Gwyneth Herbert, and a host of international artists.
Winners of the MOBO Award for ‘Best Jazz Act’ 2011, Kairos  4Tet are a four-piece band who bring a modern sound to jazz.  Their 2010 debut, ‘Kairos Moment’, positioned them as one of the UK’s premier jazz acts bridging the elusive gap between crossover appeal and serious jazz credentials.  Armed with a 4* reviews and number two in MOJO Magazine’s 2011 ‘Jazz Albums of the Year’, the quartet will perform new material along with some old favourites.
Kairos 4Tet plus support Ayanna will be performing at The Sage Gateshead on Tuesday 6th November 2012 in Northern Rock Foundation Hall at 7.45pm. Tickets are £13.50 and can be booked either by calling 0191 443 4661, online at www.thesagegateshead.org or in person from The Sage Gateshead’s Ticket Office.
Presented with Jazz North East.
