This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Maine Street Jazzmen (more or less) @ Rosies.

Iain MacAullay (tmb/vcl); Jim McBriarty (clt/vcl); George Richardson (pno); Alan Rudd (bs); Mike Humble (dms); Olive Rudd (vcl). Herbie still sunning it in Turkey, Ray clouding it on on the banks of the Tees, the jazzers of Maine Street were once again depleted. To make matters worse we had Iain on trombone! Don't get me wrong - Iain is a fine trombone player as will be mentioned later but I can never work out how to spell his surname! I've only just come to grips with his first name! Nevertheless, spellings apart, I have to commend him on the fine solo he took on Somebody Loves Me (someone in the audience asked him to be more specific!) it was absolutely spot on. His vocal on that number wasn't bad either. Jim too shone throughout on both clarinet and vox humana whilst George Richardson brings a touch of modernism to the proceedings. Alan and Mike too were solid as ever with a couple of nice bass soloes from the former. Olive slipped in a 'new' one - The Frim Fram Sauce (does anyone know what kind of delicasy the chafaffas are?). Excellent Olive - keep it in the pad! Lance.

From Wikipedia - "The Frim Fram Sauce" is best remembered for its silly lyrics. The narrator speaks to a waiter in a restaurant, as if in the process of ordering food. Throughout the song, the customer lists numerous real foods that he doesn't want, such as pork chops and fish cakes. In the chorus, he explains what he really wants: some "frim fram sauce" with the "ossentay" and "chifafa" on the side. Of course, none of these foods really exist, so at the end he gives up and says: "If you don't have it, just bring me a check for the water!"
