This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RUTH LAMBERT – ‘POPULAR, CLASSY AND DISTINCTIVE JAZZ VOCALIST’

In between came Embraceable You (with a lively trombone solo); the amusing My Heart Belongs to Daddy (wonderful Cole Porter rhymes such as caddy, paddy and Finnan Haddie); and a heartfelt Over the Rainbow with the introductory verse, which is not so often heard.
In the second half Ruth treated us to Come Rain or Come Shine; Night and Day; a very bluesy slinky Summertime; and I Get a Kick out of You.
The ‘classy’ part of the show was not just the singing, but the superb outfits to die for that Ruth wore, black dress, cream shoes and glittering coloured necklace in the first half, and a slinky grey sequinned dress with coloured neckline and cuffs for the second half. So Ruth deserved her bouquet in pink paper that she received just before the encore.
And of course this was a lesson in how to do it properly for all trainee jazz singers, in other words, smile a lot and communicate with the audience, and during instrumentals, make eye contact with the player to show that you are enjoying it. That’s what we’ve been learning this week at the Sage class, and Ruth illustrated this perfectly.
We are so lucky to have such superb singers on our local doorsteps, so to speak, so I look forward to my next lesson which will be with Zoe Gilby at the Newcastle Bridge Hotel on Sunday October 24th.
