This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Good Duos Come in Threes!

I made my regular Saturday afternoon saunter to South Shields and, as is my wont, called into the library.
Down in the depths of the building - in the Music Dept. - I noted they were selling off some CDs including three jazz ones that, by intent - or more likely coincidence, happened to be duo recordings.
And what duos!
Bob Barnard with John Sheridan not only brought back memories of those famous Vanguard recordings of Ruby Braff and Ellis Larkins but also Bob's more recent gig at Trinity Church, Gosforth with Roly (Veitch) and the gang. Some great numbers including that old favourite of Muggsy's You're Lucky To Me. A new one to me (written 1933 by Johnson and Coslow!) was Black Moonlight. Great number - love the way the notes fall together on bars 5 - 8. Checked out versions by Mel, Ernestine and Anita on Spotify but hey - Amanda King gets the cigar!
Tommy Smith and Brian Kellock made for an interesting comparision with Brian's gig at Scarborough with Julian Arguelles. Two very different tenor players but one thing is sure - Brian Kellock brings out the best in whoever he's paired with. A choice selection of 'Gassers'.
Benny Green and Russell Malone. Not Green the late sax/broadcaster or Green the late bop trombone player but Green the piano who is far from late! Coupled with guitarist Russell Malone - the pair prove to be another well matched duo playing lines that both contrast and complement in a mix of standards and originals.
A good day rounded off with a pint of Hook Norton Gold in JDW's.
