This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Zoe Gilby Quartet @ The Cherry Tree

Zoe Gilby (vcl), Mark Williams (gtr), Andy Champion (bs), Richard Brown (dms).
The trio kicked off with Straight No Chaser - I kicked off with a bottle of Black Sheep also straight no chaser. Both put me in the mood for what was to follow.
In Zoe's case this was Come's Love in mine it was Marinated Squid with Olives, Heritage Tomatoes and Basil Dressing.
Both were delightful starters.
All or Nothing At All, one of Frank's early hits with the James Band, sounded good and it was nice to hear it again. As Time Goes By brought back memories of Casablanca although, by this time my attention was diverted by the huge pile of Steamed Mussels with Smoked Bacon served in a sauce of Belgium Wheat Beer and, of course, frites that was placed before me.
Other musical moments included Squeeze Me, Caravan and a strange mixture of I'm Beginning To See The Light and When Lights Are Low that somehow worked.
It had been a good first set but, like most Cherry Tree gigs, the real fireworks explode in the second half.
Stella By Starlight by the trio got the ball rolling with Mark Williams excelling - does he ever do otherwise?
Zoe then gave us some worldly wisdom in The Lieber and Stoller classic originally written for Peggy Lee - Some Cats Know. The gently insinuating lyric, I'm sure, got under the surface of most red blooded males present.
An up tempo blast on Cheek To Cheek was taken at such a lick I defy anyone to sing it faster!
When I indulged my taste-buds with a bowl of Gratinated Summer Fruits with Mascarpone Sorbet I couldn't help but think of the opening line to Berlin's tune - Heaven, I'm in Heaven...
I Didn't Know What Time it Was also hit the spot.
Peel Me A Grape, I Only Have Eyes For You, One Note Samba, Secret Love and the encored Lady Is a Tramp - another tear-up - made for another great evening at the Cherry Tree and another fine performance by Mrs Champion to be. As mentioned, Mark was at the top of his game with Andy and Richard providing the underpinnings - as well as the occasional solo.
