This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Chestnuts In Blossom

Wow I've just been knocked senseless! I've just heard the world's greatest jazz pianist playing Two Bass Hit on KRML - Cyrus Chestnut. I've known the name but, somehow, never got around to actually hearing the man. Take it from me he is The Man! - the greatest thing since Oscar moved on.
Eager to repair this gap in my education I checked Cyrus out on Spotify where there is a banquet of Chestnuts - pardon the pun - including Cyrus Chestnut Plays Elvis which he does and wins!
I needed more so I moved on to YouTube for more evidence of his fantastic technique. Yardbird Suite:absolutely brilliant.
I'm on a high and what better way to crown it than to hear my new idol playing Body and Soul?
Well our boy does good but, he is in the middle of what I can only describe as a madhouse although in actual fact it is a Wednesday night Jam Session upstairs at Ronnie's.
Perhaps you've been to a Jam either as a player or a listener, recorded it, then listened to it in the cold sober light of morning and cringed. If you have then you'll get the picture - have a listen...

I heard Chestnut with Wayne Shorter in Newcastle a few years ago. He can play!
