This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sage Gateshead Jazz Festival Preview - The Raymond Scott Experience

This is perhaps the most intriguing concert of the Festival.
Raymond Scott? I hear you ask. A good question, truth is I have knowingly heard very little of his music myself. What I recall are an almost chamber-like approach that may or not be called jazz. Whatever, it did/does have a quirky charm about it. Many of his sidemen thought he was mad and some of his oddball titles reinforce that impression e.g. A Dedicatory Piece to the Crew and Passengers of the First Experimental Rocket Express to the Moon. A title worthy of Charles Mingus if not Jerome Kern!
Earlier I said 'knowingly heard' however, unknowingly, I must have heard quite a bit as a lot of the early Looney Tunes cartoons had scores by Raymond Scott and later his music was used by The Simpsons.
In a nutshell - not your straightforward composer/leader/arranger.
The concert itself is by the Stu Brown Sextet and opens with pre-release footage of a documentary Deconstructing Dad by filmmaker Stan Warnow who is also Raymond Scott's son.
This promises to be a true voyage of discovery for swing fans and film buffs and is presented with the Northern Lights Film Festival.
