This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Savill @ the Saville

Hi folks: just a reminder of next Friday's concert - top jazz-blogger and frequent Exchange attendee Lance Liddle tells me that trumpeter Dave Savill, who plays with Mike Lovell's excellent seven-piece band, played with the Newcastle Big Band on two of their overseas tours, and so will be making a return, spiritually speaking at least, to old stomping grounds when he plays here on January 8th. Hope you all can make it - it's a great band, and Jazz @ The Exchange needs your support! Trombonist Mike Lovell leads his popular traditional jazz band from the North West in its first excursion this side of the Pennines. Besides Mike, the band comprises the Temperance Seven’s Willy Entwistle on clarinet and saxes, the great vocalist Rosie Harrison, who also plays soprano sax, Dave Savill on trumpet - he was with the Midnight Follies Orchestra, George Chisholm and Terry Lightfoot - Chris Howse on banjo, guitar and Bing-style vocals and Colin Turner on bass sax and tuba (the two of them also form half of the well-known Harmony Hounds), plus Pete Eddowes on drums and washboard.
Their repertoire is an interesting mix of jazz standards (Once In A While, Cake Waking Babies, Whistling Rufus, At The Jazz Band Ball) and some far-from-common material - what price “Mustapha The Dancing Camel” or “Midnight, The Stars And You”? - all presented in a lively and entertaining manner and with the vocals by Rosie and Chris providing a real bonus.
A good way to start a Happy Jazz New Year!
