This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Charles Gordon @ The Cherry Tree Restaurant

Last night (Saturday) about 4.00pm I received a call to say that the musician booked for the restaurant was snowed in in Sheffield. I was in a fix not wanting to disappoint a restaurant full of diners.
On the basis of Lance's review in "Bebop Spoken Here", I called Charles Gordon who at short notice was able to play.
I had planned to stay at home by an open fire (no Chestnuts Roasting by a ....) but as I had not heard Charles play I decided to face A Winter Wonderland and go and listen to him.
The diners and myself were thrilled by Charles' virtuoso performance - just perfect for the occasion.
His programme included "The Tender Trap", "You Make Me Feel So Young" (the song Sinatra opened with at the concert I attended at the Royal Festival Hall in 1983 - memories!). "Making Whoopee", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Ain't misbehavin'", "Summertime" (a bit ironic), "Hit The Road Jack" (for people who had slipped over on the ice!) "Here There and Eeverywhere" and "Canteloupe Island" which I listened to whilst demolishing a bowl of roast tomato soup, Roasted haddock with new potatoes and salad, and white chocolate, banana and peanut bread and butter pudding. All washed down with a few glasses of Chablis. I was doing alright.
The night got even better when Charles came over after his second set to have something to eat and a chat.
Very modestly he told me his claim to fame was that in 2003 he was invited to get up and play the piano for Oscar Peterson in the Royal Garden Hotel in Barbados. Evidently Oscar was in poor health at that time and only able to walk with the aid of sticks.
Charles I am sure will be back to play again at the restaurant soon - possibly with his group on one of our Monday Jazz nights.
