This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Nel Begley Trio @ The Black Swan, Newcastle - August 28

It was back in April when I reviewed an album by Nel Begley and I was impressed* to the extent that when I heard that she was appearing in and around the north east, albeit with a somewhat truncated ensemble, I made sure I was there.

And I wasn't disappointed, in fact the album and the concert offered an interesting contrast with neither having the edge on either. By and large it was promotional although not all of the material was from the album and maybe the couple that were missing - The Gentle Rain and Spice - didn't lend themselves to being pared down.

As it happens, two of my favourite numbers of the concert aren't actually on the album. Joãzinho Boa Pinta and Trem das Onze, both sung in fluent Portuguese (I think) had a chirpy samba lilt to them despite being tales of unrequited love. Begley carried them off with  muita autenticidade as the planters down in Santos might say.

Songs from the album were: a swingy Cherokee (when does Ray Noble's tune not swing?!); Bacharach's A House is Not a Home; an original by Begley inspired by her mum, Small Flame; Lucky to be me (the opener); The Peacocks with its wistful Norma Winstone lyric and Social Call with lyric by Hendricks and not Hendrix!

Apart from the aforementioned Portuguese songs we also enjoyed to a greater or lesser degree: Nature Boy; Come Rain or Come Shine; Them There Eyes; The Sweetest Sounds; The Fool on the Hill and a belter of a take on St Louis Blues.

Of course there were three on stage and all played their part to perfection. Everytime I hear Paul Edis he seems to have upped his game - the sky's the limit and, although this was the first time I'd heard Luke Fowler, he's already high on my list of bassists - so melodic and with a tonal depth that many a bass player yearns for. Luke just happens to be married to Nel so I guess he's high on her list too.

This lunchtime (Friday) the show moves down to Durham but don't jump on the X21 as the Gala concert is sold out. However, get in quick and you could have better luck tonight in Hexham (Details on the above listings). Lance
