Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Frank Griffith @ the Morley Green Club, Wilmslow - August 12

Frank Griffith (tenor sax, clarinet); Jack Tinker, Cliff Ray (trumpet, flugel); John Padfield  (alto sax); Rick Halliwell (baritone sax); Sam Crooks (trombone); Tom Sykes (keys); Dave Luckhurst (bass); Andy Bold (drums)

I was surprised that there were not more jazz fans in attendance to hear this  fine nine-piece group led by reedsman and arranger Frank Griffith.  Born in Eugene, Oregon USA, and now residing in the Liverpool area, Frank has spent time in New York City although  I first heard him live when he played the late lamented Railway at Stockport with his quartet - a venue he played on many occasions.

I was impressed then, especially by his work on clarinet, but tonight (Aug 12) I got to hear his arranging skills and I was also impressed.

Regarding the musicians, most of them I had seen before but a newcomer who really grabbed my attention from the first notes of his solo was brassman Jack Tinker. One to watch out for!

Everyone in the band got to solo and Rick Halliwell, who I recall from many moons ago during an encounter in Wigan, did some spirited blowing on the closing  C Jam Blues

The next show at this venue is Alex Clarke and Alan Barnes and the Andrzej Baranek trio.

One thing that I would like to see improved here is the PA system.

Tequila; Una Mas; All Done; Take Five; Salt and Pepper; Oye Cómo Va; Mango Inn; Won't You Tell Me Why?; Here's That Rainy Day; Intermission Riff; The Chicken; C Jam Blues.
