Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Midnite Follies Orchestra @ Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club - June 7

Rico Tomasso (trumpet, vocals), Mike Henry, Lewis Taylor (trumpets); Richard Exall, Alan Barnes, Alex Clarke (reeds); Alistair Allan (trombone, vocals), Gordon Campbell (trombones); Martin Litton (piano); Spats Langham (guitar, banjo, vocals); Malcolm Sked (double bass); Richard Pite (drums) + Cia Tomasso (vocals)

A large turn out at St Augustine's, no surprise at all. As Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club concerts go, this afternoon's first visit to Larchfield Street by the Midnite Follies Orchestra is about as big as it gets. Fully sixty minutes before the down beat they were streaming into the room. Thirty minutes before the start just about every seat was occupied and still they were coming.

Following the death in 2021 of the Midnite Follies Orchestra's co-founder Keith Nichols, trombonist Alistair Allan decided to reform the ensemble. Here on Larchfield Street the full house marvelled at the twelve piece band's star-studded line-up. As the rhythm section struck up C Jam Blues the horns took their seats, each blowing a few bars. Ah, this was going to something special.

Twenties' Harlem, thirties Harlem, the Cotton Club. Duke Ellington (Doin' the Frog), Cab Calloway (Stomp No.1), Luis Russell (Ease on Down), each and every number, ensemble and soloists, this was the business! Ellington  featured prominently, as did Louis Armstrong (Rico Tomasso, Mahogany Hall Stomp). Hearing Rockin' in Rhythm and many other classic numbers played by these guys was a real treat.

East St Louis Toodle-Oo (Mike 'Magic' Henry as Bubber Miley), Thanks a Million (Tomasso as Armstrong, convincingly so), a wonderfully sensitive Mood Indigo, a scorching Old Man Blues, it doesn't get any better than this.

The Midnite Follies invited special guest singer Cia Tomasso to join the band for one number. As recorded by Ivie Anderson, C. Tomasso more than impressed singing Stormy Weather. Fabulous.

To close two sets of top class jazz, the Midnite Follies went out on It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing. It sure don't. Russell
