This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Bunky Green


A beautiful ballad performance by alto saxist Bunky Green who passed away on March 1 at the age of 89.

Alongside him are Donald Byrd (trumpet); Jimmy Heath (tenor sax); Wynton Kelly (piano); Larry Ridley (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums).

Outstanding solos from Bunky, Byrd, Heath and Kelly. Sadly all are now gone but thank goodness we have recordings like this to remember them by.  Lance

Thanks Audrey. I should have done my research. It's good to know one of the great bass players is still with us at the age of 87. Long may he reign.

Very good alto-my friend in Florida gave me a couple of CDs he did for the University of North Florida Big Band that featured Bunky Green. I also have an LP that Bunky did with Clark Terry,James Moody and Elvin Jones that I like a lot. Sonny Stitt was surprised how good he was, R.I.P.
