Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Meredith d'Ambrosio - Midnight Mood (Sunnyside Records)

Meredith d'Ambrosio (vocal); Frédérik Loiseau (guitar); Paul McWilliams (piano)

I know it's early in the game but, come New Year's Eve, this could well be a contender for Vocal Album of the Year  it's that good!

A choice selection of songs, some of which I knew and some of which I thought I knew only to have them interpreted tantalisingly differently by three performers who really get to the heart of the lyric and the melody.

d'Ambrosio has that husky Jeri Southern, Julie London edge to her voice that, if I'd been listening to it alone, in bed, in the wee small hours, it would have driven me slowly out of my mind. As it was, it came pretty close to doing that in the cold light of morning. It conjures up a night club scene in an old black and white movie just before somebody gets shot.

d'Ambrosio, no mean pianist herself, opts for Paul McWilliams to occupy the piano stool which he does very effectively with sympathetic accompaniment and solos that perfectly capture the mood of the album.

Loiseau, one of France's finest guitarists, completes the musical ménage à trois with single string solos that are as close to perfection as is seemingly possible. I felt his choice of notes just couldn't be bettered, they were just so right. He also composed Beaucoup Kisses of which d'Ambrosio conjured up the words.

Dare I risk listening to it in bed? I'll give it a try. It will either ease me into the arms of Morpheus or keep me awake all night. Lance

Ps: Release date is mid-March but I couldn't wait that long to write about a rather wonderful album.

Prelude to a Kiss; Best Thing For You; Beaucoup Kisses; This Happy Madness; Midnight Mood; A Ship Without a Sail; What's New?; You Keep Coming Back Like a Song; Two Lonely People; Wherever the Wind Blows.
