This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Windy City Weatherbirds @ Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club - August 17

Nottingham, Newcastle, Hexham and now Darlington. The Windy City's mini tour of the region continued with a return visit to Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club. This afternoon's session featured the regular sextet (Fraser Urquhart was gigging north of the border). Two leisurely, one hour sets found the band in great form. 

Daniel Pickering as MC is a bonus; humble, aware of the 'tradition' (ie the Chicago jazz scene of the 1930s and '40s), respectful of his band mates, engaging with his audience. Magnus Pickering, the Weatherbirds' MD, led from the front, authoritative lead cornet, orchestrating the solo features across the band. Joe Pickering, reeds, cuts a diffident figure, but boy, how he can play! 

The rhythm section - Cornelius C (guitar), Chris H-H (string bass), Robbie E (drums) - did the necessary and more; sensitive accompaniment on the ballad features, cookin' on the uptempo stuff. Frequent references to Hoagy, Muggsy, Wild Bill et al tells a story, these guys have been well-schooled - take a bow Malcolm Earle Smith. Composers were name-checked - Fats, Armand J. Piron, Walter Donaldson and more. 

A hot, hot, hot That's a Plenty, Love Me or Leave Me (the rhythm section the business!), Magnus P singing I'm Confessin' (Joe's measured clarinet), Fidgety Feet had them tapping, Who's Sorry Now? and, the surprise of the afternoon, Magnus' superb vocal on Sweet Substitute - keep this one in the set list, guys!
