This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Cal Tjader - Catch the Groove, Live at the Penthouse 1963-1967

Oh to have been a regular at the Penthouse Club in Seattle back in the 1960s. Already we've had three previously undiscovered live recordings by Ahmad Jamal, one by John Coltrane and now a doubler from that most underrated vibes player Cal Tjader.

Tjader, back in the day, could hold his own with any of the names in the 'Miscellaneous Instrument' category that vibes, along with banjos, harmonicas and accordions were once assigned to in the various polls.

This bewitching album (close on two and a half hours) covers a period of four years from Feb. 1963 to June 1967 and has some amazing playing - not just from Tjader but Clare Fischer, Monk Montgomery and Armando Peraza among others.

A lot of the music is Latin-based but it is far removed from the bland bossa nova recordings that were popular at the time although Jobim does get a look in on the second CD.

When it comes to playing a ballad on vibes then I guess that Lionel Hampton's Midnight Sun set the benchmark. Tjader's The Shadow of Your Smile runs it close and I Can't Get Started gets even closer. On Bags' Groove, he takes Milt Jackson to a split decision in his own backyard.
