Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Munch Manship Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Jan. 29

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Munch Manship (tenor sax/flute); Paul Kilvington (piano); Dave Lynane (bass); Dave Hassell (drums).

For a Sunday night, the audience was well below normal especially as Munch usually draws a packed house. Some of the regulars too were absent but they missed a great show as the quartet were in excellent form.

The tunes played covered a wide range of composers, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Benny Golson, Benny Carter, Duke Jordan, Charlie Parker, Johnny Griffin etc, something to suit all tastes.

I noticed that Munch had brought along a clarinet but it was not used. However, he did feature his flute on a tune that I’ve not heard for a while Speak Low. He gets a nice full sound on the instrument which was played without a mic. His fellow musicians did a great job and Paul Kilvington helped to maintain the high energy level with some fiery solos. Dave Lynane was sounding good and his bass work was up to his usual high standard.

For the first two tunes of the second set Have You Met Miss Jones? and In Your Own Sweet Way Phil Crabbe took over on drums and was most impressive. I checked his web site and discovered that he is based in Eastbourne and has played with many well known names in show business as well as in jazz groups here and abroad.

Dave Hassell has played many gigs with Munch and he did a first class job.

The next jazz at the Railway is on Feb 5 with the Dean Stockdale Quartet. There is no jazz on Jan 31. Mike Farmer

I've Told Every Little Star; Without a Song; Along Came Betty; The Jamfs Are Coming; Speak Low; Have You Met Miss Jones?; In Your Own Sweet Way; Jordu; Only Trust Your Heart; Billie’s Bounce.
