This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ed Kainyek Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Jan. 8

Despite the lack of advertising, the word got around that the Railway was featuring a night of modern jazz tonight (Sunday) and information regarding who was in the line-up was limited to the fact that Ed Kainyek was fronting a quartet but, nevertheless, there was a good turnout for what was the first gig of 2023.  At short notice, Ed had assembled a great band and of particular interest to me was the drummer Miles Pillinger who, as far as I know, was making only his second appearance at this venue.

Having survived a rather stressful Xmas travelling by train to Brighton and back I was looking forward to hearing some therapeutic live jazz and I got it. Ed Kainyek was in top form tonight getting a great sound from his sax by using a radio mic attached to the horn.  The selection of tunes was interesting and it was hard to pick out highlights but one number that stood out for me was a tune that not many musicians play - I’ll Close My Eyes, written by English songwriter and bandleader Billy Reid. The tune was sung by Diana Washington with the Quincy Jones Orchestra in the film The Bridges of Madison County with lyrics by American songwriter Buddy Kaye. Another number that I thought worked well was one that Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis used to feature, On a Clear Day.

George King did a fantastic job on keyboards and Gavin Barras produced some wonderful solos especially on the opening number The Way You Look Tonight.  Miles Pillinger is one drummer who is going places and I hope he makes a return to the Railway before too long.

The next jazz night at the Railway is on Tuesday Jan 10 with the Paul Hartley featuring Phil Nicholas. Mike Farmer
