The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Nica Carrington - Times Like These

Nica Carrington (vocal); John Proux (piano); Chuck Berghofer (bass); Joe LaBarbera (drums).

Impeccable interpretations of some great standards. Beautifully sung with an accompanying  A-List trio that must surely be a singer's dream. It's hard to believe that this is the native New Yorker's debut album such is the confidence that exudes from beneath her smokey delivery. If she was appearing in a club or at a festival near me I'd be first in line.

However, as there are so many great singers working the same side of the street, and having heard most of these songs almost as many times as I've had hot dinners, it was, initially, a struggle to overcome the old ennui to listen to yet more versions. Fortunately, Carrington does them better than most and, to her credit, she opts for The Summer Knows rather than that other summer song.

If I was young and discovering the magic of these songs for the first time (as I once did) then it would be like Christmas coming early. But, as a world-weary cynic, the second time around isn't always what Crosby made it out to be. Nevertheless, it's still a fine album by a singer who can weave her silken web around all but the coldest of cold, cold hearts - Lance

Release date Sept. 23. SAMPLES.

Skylark; Left Alone; When Sunny Gets Blue; Every Time we Say Goodbye; We'll be Together Again; The Summer Knows; You Don't Know What Love is; Angel Eyes; The Shadow of Your Smile; Here's to Life
