This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ruth Lambert Quartet @ The Gala, Durham - Jan 14

A first lunchtime concert of the year with Ruth Lambert attracting a near full house to the Gala Theatre. As the one hour set approached its end it became evident that some in the audience - your correspondent included - were regulars all of twenty yeas ago listening to Lambert, as a member of the resident Jazz Girl outfit, singing in the Gala's cafe bar. Over the years little has changed, except for one thing, the then superb vocalist is now better than superb! 

Joining Ms Lambert today were three established names on the jazz scene: Alan Law, piano, Paul Grainger, double bass and drummer Tim Johnston. The set list couldn't have been more familiar - good! From the opening bars of the Sammy Cahn-Jule Styne classic Time After Time it all came flooding back, Ruth Lambert is one helluva swinging vocalist! Someone once said Ella could sing the phone book. Yep, Ruth Lambert too.

Attending a Ruth Lambert vocal masterclass is to hear the GASbook impeccably sung. But Beautiful, Beautiful Love, Jobim's Corcovado, a magical I'm Old Fashioned, it was a shame we were here for just one hour, a second hour would've done nicely. Alan Law could be considered the accompanist to singers of Lambert's calibre. An ear for the right chord, sensitive, supportive, Law is the man. The bass and drums boys - Paul Grainger looking fit and well, the ever genial Tim Johnston - did the necessary, grabbing a solo or two into the bargain. A marvellous afternoon's entertainment drew to a close with How High the Moon. It had been an excellent start to the Gala's 2022 jazz programme.
