Many years ago an article in Jazz Journal urged its readers to drop everything and head to New York to catch a Joe Turner performance during the blues shouter's late-career, small (juke joint?) venue residency. It was so long ago it could have been in the days of Freddie Laker's cheap flights across the Atlantic.
The idea appealed, but, like many things, the trip never materialised. Oh, to have been there, just the once! All these years later...oh, to be in NYC this week!
Take a look at Emmet Cohen's residency at Dizzy's. Cohen's trio - Russell Hall and Kyle Poole - is reason enough to get to the Big Apple but, hey, the pianist's nightly A-list guests make it an all the more enticing prospect. Is there is a NYC resident BSH reader going to Dizzy's Thursday, Friday or Saturday? A review would be much appreciated! Russell
