This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Janet the Sax busking it - Jan 15

A few weeks ago BSH came across an alto saxophonist busking on Northumberland Street in Newcastle. Stopping to listen, then to have a brief chat, your correspondent suggested she - that's Janet the Sax - should get along to the fortnightly Black Swan jam session. At first expressing real self-doubts about her capabilities (Janet is an alto sax player looking to get into improvisation and hone her jazz skills), we left it at that.

Earlier this week Janet (pictured today, Jan 15, out busking once again in Newcastle city centre) turned up at the latest jam session. Initially reluctant to take to the floor, Janet took courage, stepped up and gave it a go. She couldn't have had better house trio support (Alan Law, John Pope and Matt MacKellar). The upshot of her jam session debut...huge applause from the ever-supportive audience. Janet's smile said it all. She'll be back, that's for sure! Russell

Does anyone know if this is the lady I just saw (August 12th 2022) at the Fringe in Edinburgh? I could listen to her all day, it was beautiful.
