Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Shelly's Soundtrack (Saturday 11)

(By Russell)

West Coast cool drummer Shelly Manne had another bow to his drum stick. When he wasn't lording it at Shelly's Manne-Hole he could be found in the Hollywood film studios composing and arranging many a film soundtack. One of Manne's silver screen assignments was scoring Burt Kennnedy's Young Billy Young

The 1969 release casts a lumbering Robert Mitchum in Burt Kennedy's western as a town sheriff taking Robert Walker under his wing. Angie Dickinson and David Carradine are among other on-screen notables. Tune to Paramount Network (Freeview) on Saturday at 5:20pm. The soundtrack was released on vinyl by United Artists.

This afternoon, I found myself watching "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" The film based on Alan Sillitoe's novel of the same name.

Whilst Albert Finney was doing his long distance running which I don't think was really that long there was some excellent trumpet playing on the soundtrack. I guessed Pat Halcox and, lo and behold, after consulting Meeker, it was indeed the late, ex Chris Barber, trumpet man, Halcox. This wasn't actually such a wild guess as, around about this time, Halcox did a similar job ghosting for Richard Burton in the filmalisation of John Osborne's angry young man novel.
