This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The State of Song.

What is it about American towns, states and cities that lend themselves so easily to jazz and popular music?

Stars Fell on Alabama has much more appeal than the Shadows' Stars Fell on Stockton - amusing as the title is.

Just about every American state and many of their cities have been immortalised in song.


Georgia on my Mind, Kalamazoo, Idaho, Indiana there must be few places in the USA that haven't had their locale put to music - New York being, perhaps - thanks to Frank - the most predominate one.

However, there are also songs like Moonlight in Vermont, Chicago, You Came Along Way From St. Louis, Memphis in June, Louisiana, New Orleans and so many more that make America seem to be so much more romantic than maybe it really is (gun laws, racism, Trump...).

Let's face it, I Left my Heart in San Francisco has more appeal as a title than I Belong to Glasgow or Dear Old Donegal although Dear Old Stockholm runs Frisco close - particularly the Stan Getz version (Standanavian).

So, the challenge is for our readers to offer UK song titles - either existing or made up - that compare with any of the above. The proviso being that they include the name of a town, city or county and, please don't include the geographically incorrect Durham Town!
