This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Michael Littlefield & Dominic Hornsby @ Prohibition Bar - Mar 6

It was all rather last minute. King Bees' harmonica demon Scott Taylor was under the weather and at short notice the band cancelled its Blind Pig Blues Club gig with Michael Littlefield stepping into the breach to play a set in the company of band mate, pianist Dominic Hornsby. 

A piano boogie for starters which, off the top of his head, Littlefield decided should be called Dom's Boogie. It had all the makings of a serendipitous occasion. Jimmy Rogers, Otis Rush, Freddie King, Jimmy Reed, it doesn't get any better than this if you're a fan of the blues, especially a fan of the great fifties' Chicago blues scene. 

Littlefield summoned the sound and style of the guitar greats at will - That's All Right (Rogers), Sit Down Baby (Rush), Hideaway (King) and You Got Me Dizzy (Reed) - singing on most of the numbers. If 'authentic' vocals is an important factor in your blues' listening then Littlefield is your man. Piano man Hornsby sat at Prohibition Bar's newly tuned upright rattling the 88s, taking an occasional vocal himself including a fixture in the King Bees' set, Kansas City. 

Any disappointment over the non-appearance of the King Bees was soon forgotten as Littlefield and Hornsby played non-stop for the best part of two hours. It was a pull-up-a-chair kind of gig in a busy city centre juke joint with (unobtrusive) dancing couples contributing to the ambience. It had been a memorable night down at the Prohibition Bar.
