This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jam Session @ The Dun Cow - October 2

The house trio set up in good time and as the session got under way a few hardy souls occupied the front row seats waiting for the sitters-in to arrive. It would be a long wait. For a while it looked as though it could be a piano trio gig! Edis, Grainger and Walker happily played for their own amusement and, of course, for the punters who had made the effort. 


A few tunes in - The Shadow of Your Smile, You'd be so Nice to Come Home to - the expected horns, strings and voices had yet to show. A ballad (Body and Soul), a blues (Now's the Time), still no sitters-in. An interval was called with a horn player en route. 

The second set resumed with pianist Paul Edis singing a couple of tunes - I'm Old Fashioned then, with George Sykes assembling his tenor sax, Autumn Leaves. As Sykes picked up the melody we had ourselves a jam session! All of Me didn't quite swing until Edis grabbed hold of it and as the affable Sykes hung around he was joined by drummer Joel Shaw (Rob Walker wandered over to the bar). 

Jesmond's student population was nowhere to be seen - was something on in town? Watermelon Man, A Train and that was it. Paul Grainger called it a day. The next jam session will be on Wednesday November 6, eight o'clock start, bring your horn.
