This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Søren Siegumfeldt String Swing - This is Meschiya Lake

Back in 1973 I was knocked out by an LP by a Danish Group – Fessor’s Big City Band. I still have the record and periodically give it a spin. Well that same Fessor – Ole Fessor Lindgreen - turns up on this delightful album although the undoubted star is Meschiya Lake.

If you live in the northeast think: The House of the Black Gardenia, if you’re a Londoner then think Kansas Smitty’s House Band or, internationally, Davina and the Vagabonds. This will give you an idea where this outfit lies stylistically if not centrally.

Ms. Lake, as befits one of New Orleans’ finest singers, has a gritty earthy voice that does full justice to the contemporary originals sung and played in an adaptation of the jazz/swing pre-war sounds. Along with Siegumfeldt, the pair composed most of the tracks which, along with covers of numbers by Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Townes Van Zandt, make for an album that, despite the seriousness of some of the material is a lot of fun.

My Dear US of A isn’t a God Bless America type song, no sir! It takes a swipe at their gun laws. Across the land some murderous fool, Can walk in to a public school, Make corpses of our children, And try to kill us all.

Apart from the vocals and the lyrics and the songs there are some great solos scattered throughout – not least by leader Siegumfeldt on saxes and flute.

I was surprised when I first played it and the surprises didn’t vanish upon subsequent listening. Big recommendation.
