The last time I heard Aurora (the premiere at the Jazz Café) I was as far back from the band as it was possible to be. This time, I couldn't have been closer if we'd have been married!
Sitting at a front table, I could hear the announcements and, of course, appreciate the music without the distraction of the bar-banter.
Although the afternoon featured three singers, each one was so individualistic that comparisions were pointless.
I've followed Zöe's career with great interest, watching how she has developed her vocal range and expanded into new horizons - including lyric writing which is part of what the Aurora project is all about.
Noel Dennis is perhaps one of the most lyrical players around and his admiration for American trumpet player Tom Harrell led to what, in hindsight, seemed an inevitable merging of minds - Harrell's music, lyrics by Gilby performed by Aurora.
With Williams, Champion and Morgan behind them, Gilby and Dennis floated, each one off in a Harrell(el) universe.
Intriguing lyrics, great music.
Super singer, super band - I'm sure Tom Harrell will love it.
